Description
What a particularly beautiful statement pendant by Dorrie Nossiter in the 1930s era. It is a large scale piece, with a carved jadeite jade panel at its heart, flanked by two fabulous gold leaves and coiled tendrils. An exquisite piece demonstrating the high quality of both design and craftspersonship with which these top Arts and Crafts designers worked. Who doesn’t love the work of Dorrie Nossiter!
Crafted in the 1930s. I rather believe a certain Mr Instone’s Langstone Silverworks was involved in the physical crafting of the piece to Dorrie’s design of course. It shows his touch in the decoration on the verso so please take a look.
The pendant is articulated, as it is in three sections. The hand crafted bale is beautiful, with typical coils and balls in gold on both sides of the bale. It is a large bale so would accommodate a variety of chains in either silver or gold. This listing is for the pendant only. The next link introduces the theme of jade, as there is a navette shaped jade cabochon in a bezel setting, which also has gold detailing at its foot. The large wreath design is scattered with singular gold balls and groupings of silver balls. It is a joy of a piece, and very similar to a Dorrie horseshoe garnet brooch I sold a year or so ago.
The mark / stamp which appears on the reverse indicates that this was a piece Dorrie created for one of the large passenger liners, where some of her jewellery was sold for a while in the 1930s. (The same mark was on the garnet brooch I mentioned earlier) I am trying to recall-I think it was the Queen Mary. Anyway I read in the past that some of those pieces were stamped up with the ship stamp and H.M.S. Indeed, as well as the large garnet brooch I have sold a smaller dress clip in the past with the same mark. This is clearly a higher-end piece so would have been destined for the rather wealthy passengers on the luxury liner. Oh, wish I could go back and enjoy that for a day!
All stones and silver / gold work are in excellent condition. The pendant measures approx 8cm in height and is approx 4.2cm wide.
