Description
An absolute show-stopper of an antique ring, c1900. Hand-crafted and showing the most lively black opal doublet I have ever come across. The colours are mesmerising and literally every photo I took was beautiful, showing the huge range of electric colours in this beautiful ring. Reds, greens, blues, purples and greens -it is astonishing! I believe it is an Australian black opal from the c1900 era.
The ring came to me, along with a few others, which are possibly attributable to Mary Thew (the Glasgow Girls). This ring has several Mary features, including the hand-crafted spirals and balls detail on each shoulder, the rope work edge to the stone’s setting and also the way the double band attaches to the verso. I adore the scalloped setting for this magnificent opal doublet – it just adds that extra touch of “differentness” to this lovely design.
If you love opals then you will be smitten with this ring on your finger. When I put it on, I could not help staring at it whilst moving the angle of my finger around. At one point the whole ring lit up with metallic and fiery reds, at others metallic cobalt, turquoise and greens and then everything else in between. It is in good condition for a piece of her age, some light surface wear in keeping with her age and there are some little nibbles from the top and bottom edge of the doublet, however, as the opal sits on a blue base-you would struggle to notice unless armed with a jeweller’s loupe. It is a gorgeous antique ring, that will give much pleasure.
The face of the ring measures approx 2.1cm by 1.2cm so is a good size. It measures as approx UK size P.5 (approx US size 8). I shall send in a new ring box by special delivery within the UK or else by international tracked and signed. Many thanks.
