A truly lovely piece of studio jewellery art by a Scottish artist (Edinburgh assay marks) and dated 1992. Very Art Nouveau in flavour -it is a lovely vintage take on the c1900 winged moth / butterfly designs used in jewellery.
I have to say, this brooch is stunning and I know that is a word that is very overused in jewellery descriptions. This mix of metals, in the use of silver with gold washed silver (silver gilt) creates a striking effect. Moonstones are such fabulous stones too, who doesn’t love to see moonstones. Therefore, the addition of these shifting blueish to clear moonstones seems to be another inspired choice.
I think this piece has been created as a one-off piece in a studio…it is so individual and makes such an impact. It may well be the silver moth / butterfly shaped brooch was one piece of jewellery, which has been embellished with the silver gilt and moonstone features…I just don’t know. A quality piece of work though undoubtedly.
The brooch measures approx 7cm in width and approx 6.3cm in height. Full hallmarks for Edinburgh 1992 and a maker’s mark, which may be for the original silver winged insect shape section only. All materials tested and are silver, gold and moonstones.
