A large hand crafted brooch, with striking abalone cabs and an overall design of a grapevine, with the stylised leaves and coils. The way the rub over settings are crafted on the shells, reminds me very much of Mary Thew, although the type of leaves are reminiscent of Dorrie Nossiter’s style.
Created in around 1900, this is an impressive size, which will definitely make an impact when worn. The green to brown shifts of the shells are very atttractive indeed. You can certainly see how much time went into the making of this whole piece and all of her individual parts. Wonderful.
She measures approx 6.5cm across by 5.1cm in height. Crafted in sterling silver (no marks but tested).Retains its original pin, hinge and C clasp. In pleasing condition-some wear to the abalone cabochons, consistent with her age.
