Description

Arthur and Georgie Gaskin were the power couple of the British Arts and Crafts movement in the early years of the twentieth century. They were considered the leading English jewellers of the era and their wonderful pieces are exhibited all over the world in top museums and galleries from the UK, to the US to Australia. Arthur Gaskin was Head Master at the Vittoria School in Birmingham, whilst his wife Georgina designed and created most of the jewellery. They are the most sought-after names in English Arts and Crafts work.

This superlative necklace is exciting on so many levels, not least because of its form. It remains in original condition, right down to the chains and even the fabulous toggle fastener that is formed into flowers on each end. The use of opal and rock crystal, such upliftingly lights stones, is in harmony with the way the leaves are formed by a mere outline of silver – this is such an ethereal and dreamy piece of work. A similar design by the Gaskins is documented on page 430  of Julius Hoffmann Jr’s book ” Der Moderne Stil”. I will attach a photo of another similar necklace shown on p78 “Arthur and Georgie Gaskin” exhibition catalogue by Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery.

The main pendant section is formed in four parts. At the top we have a small central faceted rock crystal, flanked on either side by an elongated, opal  “wing” of faceted rock crystal. Suspended below is the first of two plaques. With a lively opal in the centre of the design and an arrangement of rock crystal stones set among the openwork foliate design-it is truly a harmonious design.

Suspended below that is the heart-shaped main plaque, again set with a lively opal and an arrangement of rock crystal stones glistening and catching the light around it. The openwork is beautiful and the lightness of the leaves’ structure elevates this jewel even further. There is an elegant drop suspended below, with a further opal and two tiny faceted rock crystals. The balance and beauty of this necklace is really second-to-none.

Sumptuous festoon chains which lead from three parallel chains, to two and then to one chain as the necklace leads to the clasp. There are two station plaques, also set with an opal and rock crystals, plus an opal set station on each side further up the necklace and finally, a singular rock crystal. Astonishing to consider the amount of thought and hours of work that has gone into this c1905 creation. Even the tiniest of details has been crafted exceptionally, such as the flower-like forma on each end of the toggle. A complete work of art and a treasure that would be at home in any museum around the world

In excellent condition- all original with all stones being present and correct too. The central pendant is approx 9 cm in height and the wearable length of the chain is approx 46cm (approx 18 inches).  The stuff of collectors’ dreams.

I shall send in a necklace presentation box by international express courier or else by special delivery within the UK. Boxes in the images are for display only. Thank you.
