This is an absolutely absorbing piece of Art Nouveau design from simply one of the best makers in the c1900 era – Murrle Bennett. Fully and clearly signed on the verso with the “MBo” maker’s mark, alongside the usual “950” mark, for the quality of silver, which is of a higher silver content than sterling silver. This would have been sold at Liberty & Co in London.
I have never seen this design before and could not even find it in my research. That, in itself, is exciting – a real rarity! It is such an attractive design, typifying the Art Nouveau sinuous motifs and lines. It has such a sense of balance, as each whiplash section of lines culminates in the stylised flower heads at the top of the design. The enamel is in glorious condition, being a bright turquoise- so very captivating. The addition of a moonstone in the design is, again, very rare in their pendants and to me, elevates this beautiful thing to the very best level of Murrle Bennett designs.
It retains its large, original silver bale so would accommodate a variety of widths of chain. The listing is for the pendant only, however, I believe that pendants travel better on at least a chain of some description, so will put it on a fine modern trace chain for you, so she is not completely bare! You may well then wish to transfer her to one of your own A&C chains.
The pendant measures approx 5.2cm in height, including the bale. I will send in a new gift box as the boxes in my images are for display only.
