Description
A beautiful piece of German Jugendstil design from THEODOR FAHRNER, Pforzheim, Germany, dating to c1908. This particular design is stamped for both Murrle Bennett and Theodor Fahrner, which is lovely. Please refer to the book “Theodor Fahrner Jewelry between Avantgarde and Tradition” by Schmundt Weber Becker, p139, where you will see the same design of pendant but with a drop. This pendant has clearly lost the drop over the course of its life but I think the shape of the main plaque is still very evocative of the Jugendstil era and is completely wearable as is.
As mentioned, this is fully signed with the maker’s mark for Theodor Fahrner (TF in a circle) as well as carrying the mark for Murrle Bennett, who would have retailed this Fahrner beauty through their business. It is also stamped as “935” silver, which has a higher silver content than sterling and was usually retained for the creation of the finer pieces of jewellery.
I adore the design and usually it is seen on round pendants-this oval is rather more rare to acquire. I love the amethyst set between two hand-crafted, stylised leaves and the series of curled tendrils within that vertical openwork section. The amethyst is a red/purple amethyst and is beautifully faceted to bounce the light at the heart of the design. It retains its original bale (unlike the example in the book which has lost it). The pendant measures approx 4.6cm in height.
I am happy to include the fine, silver barrel-clasp chain, which measures approx 40.5cm (approx 16 inches).
A lovely design featuring in literature and dating as a Fahrner piece from the early years of the 1900s, which is in excellent condition, also carrying all the marks you would hope to find on such a Fahrner jewel from the era
