An exquisite and scarce example of the Jugendstil / Arts and Crafts necklaces c1900 created by Murrle Bennett, the Anglo German company, who mainly sold through Liberty & Co of London. This is a beautiful example from the c1905 era, as it ticks so many boxes. In original condition, tick- stones all perfect, tick – original chains, tick – fully signed as Murrle Bennett piece with clear MBo and “15CT” stamps, tick – a rarer example of a Toi et Moi piece, tick and finally, in excellent condition, tick!
I have always loved the early 1900s Toi et Moi necklaces, as they exude the romance of two people in love with each other. This particular example has the love element heightened further because of the use of turquoise stones (always an MB favourite). Turquoise was used in jewellery as its colour was likened to the forget-me-not flower – symbolic of everlasting love.
This type of negligee drop was designed to set the drop sections in your cleavage, flattering the form. I love the rather Secessionist Jugendstil feel to this design with its parallel bars and the juxtaposition of straight lines and circles. The main part of the pendant does slide up and down so you can determine where it sits and how long the chains on the drops are. A gloriously rare piece and with clear stamps to the verso. In excellent condition-it has had a replacement clasp at some point in her past.
The wearable length of the necklace is obviously adjustable as you can move the main section up and down-please do so with care, as these are the original chains.
