Description

A beautiful signed Andreas Odenwald brooch in a design I have not come cross before. The overall “eye” shape is so unusual and the pop-out repousse roses detailing around its border really do set this brooch apart from some other Jugendstil pieces of the era.

There are 8 of these stylised roses, decorated in between with groupings of small leaves. The style of the roses do remind me of the early Arts and Crafts “Glasgow Rose” designs. I love how the centre of the brooch is hand hammered silver, which is very typical of the designs that were being produced in that era.

This lovely brooch is in super condition, with original pin and safety-pin type of clasp. The markings are clear and crisp, reading from left to right along the top rim on the verso they read: “800 GESCHUTZT AO Odenwald maker’s mark and finally the crescent moon and crown German mark indicating silver”.

The brooch retains patina…I enjoy looking at it and didn’t have the heart to remove it but perhaps you would wish to. It measures approx 5.3cm wide by approx 3.5cm so is a pleasingly impressive size.
