Description
A striking, hand wrought c1900-1910 Arts and Crafts brooch, which reminds me very much of the work of George Hunt, Birmingham. I am therefore, attributing it as an early piece of his work. Those heart-shaped leaves, set at different angles throughout the design, the complex cut of the stone and how it has been set in this individual bezel setting. The spirals too, also a part of Hunt’s repertoire.
The rope work twist set at the base of the amethyst’s setting is typical of the A&C designers of that era too. I love the small circular hole on the verso in the centre of the amethyst, as it really helps to highlight the interesting features in this spectacular amethyst. I adore the way the soft facets have been chiselled to match the organic shape of this large amethyst cabochon. There appears to be two stamps on the front on the right of the brooch, although I struggle to read any distinguishing marks. It is more likely that as the silver was poured into the mould, it didn’t quite cover the structure completely-hope that makes sense.
Anyway, a large, organic and striking piece of A&C jewellery, possibly by Hunt and most definitely by the Birmingham School. I shall send the brooch in a new gift box and by complimentary tracked and signed delivery. Thank you.
