A really scarce Arts and Crafts ring in gold with a large foiled opal, which looks like a water opal perhaps? as it has those vivid purple flashes in the top section. The colours are vibrant, the shifts from blue / purple to the deep sea-green…so eye-catching. It is English and carries the Edwardian mark (in keeping with the 1910 era) of “9CT” on the underside of the closed-back setting.
The colours in this piece are very reminiscent of the bold peacock colours favoured in jewellery in the early years of the 1900s. It is rare to find such a ring and rare too, to find one with a solid closed-back setting with the foil in such beautiful condition, with no damage. All too often you find that the foil has been damaged due to liquid cleaners having been used on the piece. I believe this ring has escaped as it is crafted in gold and therefore, not requiring cleaning as often as silver rings that oxidise with time.
The colour shifts are vibrant and if you hold the ring sideways at eye level, you can see what I call “lightning” streaks of vibrant purple in the top layer of colour. I have seen this previously on water opals. The ring is set in a wide bezel setting, which has a fine millegrain finish. It is beautifully finished.
This is a scarce and well-constructed antique Arts and Crafts ring that is very comfortable to wear. It measures as approx a UK N (US size 6.75). In pleasing condition with minimal surface wear for her age. Ready to wear or else to gift. I will send in a new ring box to keep her safe.
I will send by complimentary international tracked and signed post or else by Special Delivery within the UK. Box is for display purposes only. Thank you!
