A fabulous piece of hand-crafted work, indicative of the Birmingham School of design, and showing features through which I can feel the Gaskins’ work. Arthur and Georgie Gaskin instructed students at the Vittoria School and there were some big names amongst them. The decoration to the verso is particularly reminiscent of Gaskin pieces.
I love this beautiful, impressive necklace, with its showy daisy (?) flower set at the top of the round panel. It is not often you see so many petals worked into a hand-crafted piece so it is unusual with regard to that. There is also a further halo of petals so the petals seem to radiate out from the turquoise flower centre. The leaves and tendrils detailing is beautiful and those rows of graduated balls up each side I have seen on Dorrie’s work. Yes, Dorrie was from the Aston area of Birmingham, so also received the benefit of the Gaskins’ tuition at the school during her years there.
There is so much to love, like those three baroque pearls drops that are playfully suspended below the round panel, like the matching turquoise links that are set as spacers, one at the top of the pendant and two as spacers in the chain. It allows a doubling of chain from the pendant to the first two spacers. I adore the oversized, completely crafted by hand toggle fastener and link.
In pleasing condition, I did wonder if there originally had been a small leaf at the bottom on the left but I don’t think the design suffers from not having that, if there had been one at one time. Pearls are natural baroque pearls and the silver has been tested. The drop of the pendant from the spacer above the round section is approx 6.8cm. The wearable length of the chain is approx 40cm (15.75 inches).
It is a lovely work of art, which must have taken such a long, long time to create.
I shall send in a necklace presentation box by Special Delivery within the UK or else by International Express courier. Boxes in the images are for display only and are not included.
