Description
A standout Murrle Bennett c1905 brooch, designed by the wonderful Jessie Marion King (one of the Glasgow Girls). Jessie King’s work is hugely sought-after and with this design and striking colourway, you can see why her work is so beautiful.
The brooch displays multi coloured enamels, as well as non-enamelled sections which contrast against the colours of the enamel so successfully. Perfect for Autumn / Fall. It is a fine example of its type, having a gold hinge, clasp and pin.
These fine, hand worked enamel pieces are so very individual in their colour selection and this example shows orange, green and yellow. A striking, organic design of a stylised flower which is lovely. The form of the brooch is quite concave and it feels so tactile and “right” in your hand. An excellent and rare piece by King for Murrle Bennett, which was most probably retailed at Liberty & Co in London.
The brooch is stamped to the verso with “SILVER” and with the Murrle Bennett maker’s mark clearly impressed beneath it. There are hand etched jeweller’s numbers that I spotted under the loupe. It looks like the serial number / design number “438-31” and below it “E/c”.
The brooch measures approx 3.7cm wide by approx 2.3cm in height. It is in pleasing condition. There is a tiny piece to the centre right, which shows the enamel that has not infilled the cell completely-it is not later damage. It is tiny so I mention for accuracy purposes. The enamel is vivid and glossy, just as it should be.
A beautiful thing indeed which will be sent by Special Delivery or else by International courier in a brand new gift box. (Box in the images is for display purposes only.) Thank you!
