A beautiful example of the Arts and Crafts necklaces c1900 created by Murrle Bennett, the Anglo German company, who mainly sold through Liberty & Co of London. This is a beautiful example, as it ticks so many boxes. In original condition, tick- stones both perfect, tick – original chains, tick – original toggle fastener, tick – gold mounts to the two amethysts, tick – fully signed as Murrle Bennett piece with clear MBo and 950 stamps, tick and finally, in excellent condition, tick!
A lovely necklace, which shows both of the man types of chain used by Murrle Bennett in these A&C pieces. The elongated links section runs from the spacers on each side, up to the toggle fastener. The smaller links chain is doubled in festoon-style from the spacers down to the main pendant. Just beautiful!
The hammered (planished) silver, the faux rivets and the “S” type of design on the spacers and the main pendant are typical of these Murrle Bennett pieces. What always astonishes me, every time I look at them, are the gold collars for the amethysts and how the tiny mille grain detailing finishes the look. The warmth of the yellow gold against the plum of the amethysts is really a joy!
The wearable length of the chain is approx 50cm (a touch under 20 inches) so it is lovely to see a longer example of this type. The shield part of the pendant is a lovely, large example too, at approx 4.3cm in height including the drop. Gorgeous piece. Fully stamped with both “MBo” and “950” on the verso.
