This is one of the very rarest beauties I have had the pleasure of selling. In fact, I think it is unique. A fabulous Jugendstil / Arts and Crafts hand created necklace by Murrle Bennett c1905 in the Jugendstil / Arts and Crafts style with hand hammered silver work, opulent, rich plum amethysts, a large pendant section and completed by the original chains and matching amethyst spacers. As if that were not enough on its own, being such a rare and absorbing design (fully signed as you would hope, both on the pendant and on the chain), an incredibly talented silversmith has created / adapted the matching earrings. I have scrutinised the earrings under the loupe and I can honestly say I am speechless that this has been achieved. In fact, I have rarely seen this sort of modern day craftsmanship, that can sit alongside an antique partner so seamlessly. I am not even sure if some elements are antique or whether the earrings have been completely created as a bespoke request. Needless-to-say the details match is exquisite, as is the matching of the amethyst stones.
Truly an incredible set-the design is the very best of that Jugendstil design, so celebrated in the pieces by the Anglo-German company of Murrle Bennett. Hand hammered silver panels, faux rivets and fabulously faceted rich plum amethysts. MB pieces were sold at Liberty’s of London and they have remained a constant in the world of antique jewellery collecting. As mentioned, both the pendant section as well as the original chain with toggle fastener, are stamped as “950” (higher grade silver than sterling) and also have the MBo maker’s mark. In excellent order-both the necklace and the earrings. The pendant section measures approx 5.5cm in height and the chain measures approx 47cm (18.5 inches) in length. The earrings have a drop of approx 4.3cm.
Such an incredibly rare pairing and a unique set to own. They will be enjoyed!
