A rarity of an antique necklace, with huge faceted amethysts and double chains in this riviere type of necklace. It is a completely beautiful thing and I have not come across one like it before. The size of those wonderfully cut amethysts, the riviere design, the gilt flower design plaques between each stone and the icing on the cake is the 18ct gold, platinum and rose cut diamonds clasp. It bears a small French stamp and it looks like a PB perhaps, so I am assuming this fabulous piece was crafted in Paris, France.
The silver settings are large, as are the squareish claws, which makes me think of 1920s heading to the 1930s. There are 11 most impressive graduated round cut amethyst, which have a mid plum hue and which bounce the light around with ease. The smallest stone, at the clasp, measures approx 1.4cm in diameter and the largest stone at the centre measures an impressive 1.9cm in diameter. There are 8 small openwork flower detail plaques in between the stones and these are a gilt metal. The chains on the necklace are silver. As if the necklace was not spectacular enough with those stones…. the top notch clasp is a reminder that this was a piece of taste and by a fine maker. The 18ct carat and platinum clasp is set with rese cut diamonds, two rows of six, so 12 diamonds in all. As mentioned, the clasp has the French stamp and tests as a minimum of 18ct gold.
She is a glamorous survivor of the golden age in Paris and, at about 100 years old or more, is doing well. For accuracy purposes I would like to mention a chip to the front facet of the stone two from the clasp on the right of the necklace. It feels as if it has been smoothed-it is more like a slice of stone so I wonder in a jeweller has dealt with this in the past. It is not very noticeable as the round shape of the stone is unaffected and it still sits beautifully in the setting. It is one of the smallest stones, at the back and clearly, as it is not really noticeable, it is certainly not worth replacing the original stone. Only other thing is a loop replacement to the setting of the stone on the left of the central stone-again dealt with historically by a jeweller. A fabulous necklace and most likely unique!
It measures approx 37.5cm (14.75 inches) in length and is clearly a very visible, statement choker style piece of jewellery. I shall post in a necklace presentation box by express courier internationally or else by special delivery within the UK-thank you.
