A particularly attractive hand wrought, antique c1900 Arts and Crafts necklace, which shows elements from both the Glasgow School and the Birmingham School, hence I have not been able to attribute it. It most resembles a Glasgow School festoon I sold last year so that would be my guess. She is a beauty though- with all original, hand crafted chains with silver balls on the tiny silver links. It is wonderful to see a festoon design with these intricate chains, as usually you see plain links in the festoon chains. How fabulous to have both turquoise spacers and also matching silver leaves spacers-it really links the chain section to the central plaque’s detailing.

There is a theme of a three ball cluster in the whole necklace, with a small trio placed within each of the three-leaf designs to each side of the central turquoise stone. If you flip the necklace over, you can see a cluster of three berries to the verso underneath each of the leaves on the spacer sections. It does look like someone’s calling card so perhaps you know the designer? The turquoise matrix stones are very well matched with a typical blue base and with those lovely chocolate brown details within it. The squareish claws I have seen before on a few Glasgow School pieces. It is a wonderfully detailed, hand crafted gem of a necklace from the early years of the twentieth century and looks beautiful when worn, with the detailing and elaborate chains.

The pendant drop of the main section is approx 3.6cm and the wearable length of the necklace is approx 42cm (approx 16.5 inches). In excellent order-only thing to mention is with the setting of the smallest stone at the bottom of the design….the bezel has a split in it, when you look through a loupe. Everything is secure, including the stone. All stones are blue, in excellent condition and the silver work is a dream!
