A wonderful example of a Victorian, fine quality carved cameo set in fine 9ct gold, which is of a larger than average size and so ultimately makes such a wow of a statement. The subject matter is an interpretation of the painting by Botticelli, The Birth of Venus. Most likely crafted c1890.
This superbly crafted example retains the partial UK hallmarks, along with the maker’s mark so we can see it is clearly of a fine quality and heritage. I love the way the gold setting has been swathed around the contours of the shell, so very generously. I have tried to capture this on the photos. It really has been beautifully done. At the foot of the whole setting is a fine rope work twist detail, which is followed by a wider ribbon-like trim at the foot of the brooch.
This beautiful example is larger than most others I have come across- she measures approx 6cm across by approx 4.9cm. It has its original pin and catch too. In excellent condition and ready to display or wear.
