A vibrant 18ct gold necklace with flower cluster and festoon chains, Victorian design

A very pretty necklace, which is at least vintage, if not antique. Hand crafted in 18ct gold predominantly, and retaining its original barrel clasp fastener. It is very reminiscent of necklaces c1900 with a flower cluster central section, from which numerous chains are connected. Both turquoise and pearls, here we have half pearls and seed pearls se in the design, were oftentimes used together in jewellery from the Victorian era onwards.

The gold is not stamped but has been tested as 18ct gold. It has that strong buttery colour you instantly recognise with 18ct gold. The central panel uses half pearls and turquoise stones to represent a flower. The three small festoon chains attached to that have the most beautiful turquoise disc beads and seed pearls set among the gold links. Those three chains join a triangular link at each side of the main chain and we find two natural turquoise beads of a larger size on each side leading to the clasp. The shape of the petals on the central section (more pointed than usual) could indicate an Indian heritage, as could those triangular links. Of course, it could be English and I could be completely wrong. The high level of craftspersonship is evident to see in every small detail in this complex piece.

The wearable length of the necklace is approx 39cm (15.25 inches) so it is a choker style necklace. In pleasing condition with no damage to the stones, thankfully. There are some minute historic jeweller’s fixes among the gold links in several places- if you scrutinise under a strong loupe, you can spot them. Signs of life and the necklace has clearly done well for decades with those fixes so I personally, would happily leave them. I have taken that into consideration with the price.
