A wonderfully detailed design with all of the Gaskins’ motifs you would hope to see in this ethereal piece. The stylised leaves, the distinctive flowers and even one or two details I have not seen on necklaces before, all fabulously hand-worked in true Gaskin’s detail. It is a largeish plaque so catches the eye. It was created in the c1900/1905 era by the powerhouse creative team of Arthur Gaskin and his wife Georgina, in Birmingham, England.
It is always such a delight to find a Gaskins’ piece as each one is of course, different to the last. I did wonder if the large plaque had been two separately suspended sections at one time however, as the piece has been so expertly put together I am now starting to believe it was made that way initially-perhaps in a design variation. The pendant is so detailed and you instantly recognise the stylised leaves of the Gaskins, the different flower designs and also the use of berries interspersed in the design.
The two moonstones have high adularescence and so the blue schiller is easy to see. There are two different flower designs with a small mother of pearl section as the flower head, 10 in all. The teardrop-shaped pearl detail above the large moonstone has a super branch motif, with berries either side of the twig…first time I have had that particular motif in one of the pieces I have acquired. I would call this pendant exquisite and I feel it has such an ethereal quality to it, despite the labour-intensive detailing. It’s a wonderful piece!
In excellent condition condition with what appear to be the original chains and the hand-crafted toggle fastener, typical of the Gaskins’ pieces. I love how it has a little cluster of berries on each end. The tiny baroque pearl drop could be a replacement but the size and style suits the piece. The plaque section measures approx 5cm by 5cm and the wearable length of the chain is approx 51cm (20 inches).
I shall send in a new gift box as the box in the images is for display only. Complimentary special delivery within the UK or else express courier internationally.
