A very rare and impressive signed silver gilt Theodor Fahrner Jugendstil pendant, dating from the c1919-1920 era. In three sections, this impressive articulated pendant is fully signed “TF” and “935”. It has a large diamond-shaped form which is filled in, in part with the most wonderful white / cream coloured enamel. This colour, with the pearls and onyx and the most colourful, lively black opal doublets makes for a statement Fahrner piece. It also has an overall light gold wash to it.
The pendant is from a range, created in the 1919-1920 years and you can see other similar examples on p186 of the “Theodor Fahrner Jewelry between Avantgarde and Tradition” book by Schmundt Weber Becker. Crafted in 935 silver, which is a higher grade than sterling. It was reserved for the best pieces of jewellery design.
The main part of the pendant is an openwork design, with sinuous curves in the silver design…so ornate. The central black opal doublet has a halo of sparkling marcasites around her, which add to the idea of this being a lively, light piece of work. This opal has lots of electric green and purple flashes. Pearls are then set at the compass points, punctuated by four little onyx cabs at the corner points. The outer framework has been filled with this gorgeous pale cream enamel, in excellent condition.
The matching integral bale is large, intricate and is also studded with a small round onyx cabochon. The pear shaped black opal doublet drop takes your eye back to the main part of the pendant, so there is such a lovely balance in this large piece. The opal on the drop is terrific-with many, many electric green flashes so please do look at all of the photos.
In excellent order, some light wear to the opals but nothing major. In remarkably pleasing condition. Enamel is wonderfully fresh and intact. This large pendant measures approx 8.5cm in height by approx 3.2cm wide.
