Description

Beautiful Arts and Crafts earrings by Bernard Instone c1930 in a rare design.  They are book piece earrings featured on page 166 of “Bernard Instone Designer and Craftsman; the art of a jeweller” by Tracy Henriksen. Such an attractive design, with pear-shaped briolette amethysts decorated with draped, hand-tooled silver leaves and accented by emerald pastes. These large drops are suspended below shield-shaped faceted amethysts so there is much movement and play of light as you wear them.

I love the way the leaves’ decoration is opposing to the other earring so that they are a mirror pair. The use of the pale plum amethysts and the rich green of the amethyst pastes is exactly the colour combination favoured by Bernard in the c1930 era for brunettes. It has been well-documented that the mix of green and purple stones were his preferred combination for brunettes, whilst a citrine and peridot combination was favoured for blondes. Bernard, therefore, often made the same design but in those two colourways, specifically taking into account how the stones would look against the hair.  They have been fitted with silver posts and butterfly backs, making them convenient for us today.

The amethysts have been superbly-cut and they bounce the light around easily too. In excellent condition, each earring measures approx 4.2cm in height. Some patina which would polish if you prefer.

A gorgeous pair of earrings, with beautiful stones and in such a rare design. Stunning!

I shall post by special delivery within the UK or else by courier internationally. Please note the boxes in the images are not included, however I will send in new boxes for their safekeeping. Thank you.
