It is always rewarding to find pieces that have survived together over the years. Here we have a Victorian design demi-parure from the earlier decades of the twentieth century (perhaps the 1930s), consisting of an intricate flower design riviere necklace and her matching drop earrings. Typically Victorian in motifs, this is an intricate design, executed in silver gilt. There are some small silver marks on a couple of the rings, which lead me to believe it is a European piece, perhaps French. There is a lightness to the structure, as the silver work is almost filigree in design-this adds the necessary structure for the decoration but prevents the pieces being too heavy to wear comfortably. It is a highly ornate and finely crafted set and you need only study the verso to see how each glass pearl has been threaded onto the design.
A beautiful necklace of a riviere design so that the circular flower panels run all the way around the necklace to the clasp. There is also a flower and bow drop pendant which ties in beautifully to the bow and flower design of the earrings. The richness of the gold overlay on the silver works well to add warmth to the piece. The necklace has been well crafted and it offers flexibility and fluidity when you wear it. It drapes over your contours extremely well.
The earrings reflect the design of the central pendant part of the necklace. They have been fitted with early clips-I am not sure if they are original to the piece or not. Asides from that it appears to be in all original condition. Not a single glass pearl is missing-I have scoured it with my jeweller’s loupe. Fairly astonishing to see it all so intact. Some patina but would polish further if you desired. The necklace is approx 43cm (a touch under 17 inches) in length. The pendant drop is approx 5cm. Earring drop is also approx 5cm. As said, I feel this is a later demi-parure referencing the Victorian ideals. European silver marks are visible on some of the links.
