A wonderful c1900 German Jugendstil Art Nouveau necklace in lovely condition with it’s exquisite pale blue and purple plique-a-jour enamel and its sparkling diamond pastes, including its lovely original paste drop.
This necklace is fabulous-I adore the pale blue and purple plique, which is similar to the combination you usually find on Heinrich Levinger plique pieces. This is clearly a Pforzheim piece, of superb quality, stamped with the 935 stamp for higher than sterling silver content. (This silver was usually reserved for the finer pieces of work) It also carries a UK Registered mark so I am assuming this was created in Germany and retailed in the UK.
The design is superb, with two draped flower heads, detailed in the blue and purple plique-a-jour enamel and studded with glittering pastes of various sizes. The flower heads drape towards each other to a centrally set paste. There are sinuous Art Nouveau lines, forming varied shapes at the side and bottom of the structure. The single diamond paste spacer set above the pendant, enables the balance of double chains suspending the pendant. The paste drop references the afore mentioned paste spacer, so there is much thought evident in the design of the necklace.
The pastes are in super order, and there is also no damage to the plique. All in excellent order. There is a ding in the original barrel fastener but it still works fine-just fasten it until you hear the secure click. That is the only thing to note.
With its original chains, plique and stones-this is an eye-catching example of a Jugendstil plique-a-jour necklace. There is a little patina so you can polish further if you love the “as new” look to your silver.
This beautiful pendant necklace would have been created in Pforzheim, Germany at the height of the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) movement, c1900. It shares the most similarities with other Hermann & Speck, Levinger / Bissinger pieces.
The pendant section from the paste spacer measures approx 5.6cm and the wearable length of the chain is approx 40cm (15.75 inches).
