Description
This is such a rare find-an antique carved Boulder opal pendant, of a good size, dating from the early years of the twentieth century. The thick 18ct gold bail is stamped clearly with the Edwardian stamp “18CT”. The design is of a crab sitting sideways on the pendant. There are wonderful colour plays as you can see, and I love the way the face and pincers has been carved in at the side of the rock. His claws run around to the verso of the pendant. This has to be one of the rarest crab pendants I have come across and I am sure it would be a delight for Cancerians to own. Please note the chain is not included-the listing is for the pendant only.
The design is similar to pieces carved by Wilhelm Schmidt (1845-1938), who was a much celebrated gemstone engraver and carver, specialising in carving opals. He was born in Germany, then moved to Paris and consequently moved to London, where he created pieces for the top jewellery companies of the day- including the likes of Child & Child of London.
It is such a lovely, substantial piece, measuring approx 5cm in height by approx 3cm in width. It weighs 14.8g.
I will send in a new gift box (boxes in the images are for display only) by special delivery within the UK or else by international express courier. Thank you.
