Description

What an amazing antique butterfly brooch! Most likely a late Victorian piece so around the 1900 ear, it has been executed in a gilt washed metal. The opals, which form the main body of the butterfly are incredibly fiery so I hope you can see the striking greens and blues. You cannot help but sit and play with this antique beauty just to see the play of colour in those stones. I am assuming they are Boulder opals.

The wings are set with smaller opals, as well as with vibrant red pastes and there are tiny seed pearls set all the way around the outer edges of the butterfly’s wings.

The use of these wonderful stones, together with the open structure of the wings, adds a real sense of frailty and delicateness to the piece, despite it actually being quite a large brooch / clip. It has an ingenious way of opening – from the back you push the wings together and that opens a hinge, as well as the two curved prongs. This would clip fiercely on any fabric. Very well-designed and please do take care with the prongs when they are open…they are sharp, which is why there is such a good grip on the fabric.

The brooch measures approx 3.8cm by 2.7cm. In pleasing condition …no damage to opals at all. Just a teeny flea bite off a couple of the tiny pastes only visible under scrutiny with a strong magnification loupe. In excellent order and this will flutter off quickly I am sure-those opals are special!

The brooch will be sent in a new box (boxes in images are for display only and are not included) and by complimentary special delivery within the UK or else by express courier internationally. Thank you.
