What a lovely c1900 English Arts and Crafts design, most likely a Birmingham School piece. It is super to see quite large proportions, with the round MOP discs graduating in size from larger to smaller as they reach the final section of chain before the toggle fastener. The elongated teardrop-shaped MOP central feature makes a large statement too. It is such an attractive necklace.
Wonderful to see this glorious piece of hand-crafted work retaining all of its original features, right down to the original hand-made toggle fastener. I love to marvel at the details that reflect the hours and hours of toil that have gone into her creation. Graduated MOP discs and graduated silver balls detail, along with graduated open-work panels…it is actually not so often that you see those as graduated features. However, this further demonstrates the hand-crafted quality and the attention to detail that this designer/ craftsperson exercised in the execution of this piece.
The bezel settings in silver have been carefully worked to fit each piece of MOP perfectly. This illustrates the opposite ideal to mass production, in such an excellent way.
I love, too, the twisted links that run up to the toggle-typically hand-crafted A&C features.
It is a beautiful and well-balanced necklace of a useful length to wear with a variety of clothes. The length is approx 42.5cm (approx 16.75 inches) and sits well just below the throat area. The central MOP teardrop is approx 2.7cm in height.
No markings (as you would expect for c1900 A&C) but is sterling silver throughout and does have some heft to it so is not as lightweight as some other smaller A&C pieces.
I will package carefully and post with Special Delivery or else International express courier. The box in the images is not included but I will package in a new necklace presentation gift box. Thank you!
