Description
A lovely Amy Sandheim of London piece, c1930, which features an array of opals including foiled water opals, fire opals and a white opal, alongside quartz cabochons and faceted citrine stones. It is a pleasingly sturdy and substantial piece, which comes complete with her original, matching chain with opal stations to match the pendant. A joy of a thing, focussing a joyful colour palette of orange, yellow and white (with the blue and green flashes of the water opals too, of course).
In a typical Amy cruciform shape, this is an eye-catching piece of work with large gems. A round, domed central carnelian cabochon sits at the centre, with foiled water opals, fire opals, faceted citrines and quartz cabochons decorating the structure surrounding it. I absolutely adore seeing these water opals…foiled so they look sort of orangey but when you move the pendant you can see the flashes of green and purples in the top layer. Gorgeous.
The large bale is set with a very lively round white opal, that has lots of colour flashes and which has natural surface-reaching inclusions. An intricate A&C hand-made chain is set with four water opals; the first pair have an orange base and the second pair have more of a white base. Again, moving them around you can see the green /purple flashes in the top. I love the central rose decoration to the verso-first time I have seen that detail…very pretty!
The pendant measures approx 9.6cm by 6.1cm and the chain measures approx 51cm (20 inches). I have not over polished so if you prefer more shine, that is up to you. Some evidence of water / liquid cleaning in some of the foiled stones (usual for its age) but asides from that, pleasing condition with no chips etc to the stones either. It is another wonderful Amy piece so I am sure she will be off to her new home soon.
