Description

This beautiful Jugendstil / Art Nouveau stylised moth design buckle dates from the c1905 era and is a design that is attributed to Andreas Odenwald of Pforzheim. It is a large and impressive design, which would have been particularly avantgarde in its era. The design appears on p287 of Fritz Falk’s book “Art Nouveau Jewellery from Pforzheim”.

This was sold to me as “silver” however, I think it more likely this is silver plate. This would be more in keeping with the Czech peacock eye glass cabochons. This may even be an antique copy of Odenwald’s design as I would have thought he would create in silver rather than silver plate. The piece in the book is also unsigned so it is a little mystery. It is a wonderfully stylised motif of the Art Nouveau / Jugendstil era and would make a fabulous display. The peacock eye cabs are vivid in their cobalt blue and deep sea green colours.

It is an impressive piece at approx 9.5cm. There is some patina so it would polish further. Some wear to the glass cabs (inevitably). The large central cab has a crack /  line near the bottom but I believe it to be from manufacture rather than damage. All-in-all an impressive statement piece which would display well.

I will send carefully wrapped in a box and by complimentary tracked and signed post. Thank you.
