Description
A beautiful design on this English hand wrought necklace from c1900. It incorporates lots of features you would wish to see in such a piece; a skilfully crafted central wreath section with leaves and berries, drops, clusters of berries, varied stations along the chain, the inclusion of more intricate hand-crafted links and also a hand-crafted toggle catch. It is a beautiful thing.
I love the alternating green and white throughout the design, both in the stations and in the two drops on the pendant section, one in chrysoprase and one in mother-of-pearl. Each stone is bezel set with the chrysoprase stones being open-backed, allowing that rich apple green colour to be seen when you wear the piece. The pearls are also individually-set by hand and are closed-backed. The large round and oval alternating silver links on the chain give it such a light look and I love the two silver intricate panels added as the final stations along the chain. A rather curved toggle is a lovely twist too.
There is a lightness and freshness to the necklace, both in design and in the stone selection against the silver. There are two drops, so you also get a real sense of articulation when you wear the piece. The pendant section measures approx 6.5cm from the pearl to the three-berry cluster. The chain is a generous length at approx 68cm (26.75 inches).
