The most stunning French c1900 Art Nouveau piece, which overlaps into the Arts and Crafts movement for sure. It is a WOW of a piece and an exciting find, as it is a rare, signed piece by Jules Déon, who was an important part of the Nancy School of Art Nouveau. It is signed with his “J D” mark in a diamond on the front of the brooch, alongside a French mark for silver. A whole chapter is dedicated to his work in the book by Etienne MARTIN “Bijou Art Nouveau, Nancy 1890-1920, Strasbourg” published by Quotidien, 2015.
This striking and powerful brooch, is clever in its use in the use of the technically impressed marks on the hammered silver seed heads of the honesty flowers. This would have been rather a bold and avantgarde move back in those days. Déon used the honesty flowers motif a lot in his work.
The choice of the beautiful, ethereal Ceylon moonstone at the centre, adds a lightness and femininity to the design as a whole. It has a high level of aduralescence. Beautiful and in super condition. It measures approx 5.5cm by approx 3.3cm.
