Description
A beautifully designed Arts and Crafts necklace attributed to Mary Thew (one of the Glasgow Girls) in the earlier years of the twentieth century. It is very similar to another Thew attributed moonstone necklace I sold within the last year. It has the same central openwork circular structure with the pairs of ropework swirls and clustered balls features.
It is such a beautiful festoon drop necklace and the white moonstones are all wonderfully individual in shape and domed. It is a finely executed piece, clearly done by hand, even down to the intricate Arts and Crafts chain used in the design. The chains culminate in a hand-crafted toggle fastener. There are 11 moonstones in total in the whole design, including the 5 spacers along the chain. It’s a beauty!
There are four domed, closed back moonstones at the Cardinal points with a 5th stone set to the centre. Each stone has been carefully set by hand and has a delicate ropework detailing at its base. The stone drop that is suspended below the main part of the pendant is beautiful….those stacks of tiny silver balls set at three points around the setting. Wonderful detailing.
The drop section from the top of the spacer measures approx 8.2cm in height and the wearable length of the chain is approx 40.5cm (16 inches).
The necklace is in pleasing condition. All original stones are present and there are no chips at all. Very little wear to the stones’ surface too, which is excellent. There are two small moonstones where there is a tiny bit of discolouration on the setting at the back of the stone but it is minimal and usual for these antique pieces. Mentioned for accuracy purposes only as it does not detract from the piece. The stones are closed-back so care should be taken not to use liquids when cleaning her-just a silver polishing cloth will suffice.
