Description
Clearly a quality and richly worked Arts and crafts pendant necklace, perhaps by one of the Guilds, crafted by hand in the c1900 era. It is certainly an impressive piece with beautiful hand-crafted leaves and scrollwork forming an openwork central section in gold and silver. Everything has been carefully designed to offer a first-class aesthetic, including the 18ct gold chain and the fabulous hessonite-garnet set gold box clasp. It is obviously an important piece of work and I have been attempting to attribute it. Although I haven’t been able to yet discern the maker, I do believe it is a high profile designer / craftsperson, having a few names in mind but not quite the leap to attribute it 100%. It has been away for official valuation, which is currently £2,500 and I will include the certificate with the necklace for you.
The large faceted citrine is a warm yellow colour, suiting the yellow gold beautifully and supporting the light and sunny disposition of the piece generally. It does reflect the light well too. In among the scrolls and leaves on the central panel, if you look at the six o’clock position, you will see the outstretched wings of a bird; you don’t always notice it immediately. The dove is said to represent peace and purity so it is a lovely hidden meaning to the necklace.
The citrine drop is crafted in 18ct gold and has small gold balls to either side of the loop, with one on the connecting link too. This is a typical Arts and Crafts detail. So much detail has gone into the box clasp, which is set with a faceted hessonite garnet. The chain is pleasingly, a longer length and is unmarked but tests as 18ct gold. Lots of buttery and sunny yellows in this joyful creation.
