Description
A superlative example of the glorious Jugendstil / Arts and Crafts necklaces c1900 created by Murrle Bennett, the Anglo German company, who mainly sold through Liberty & Co of London. This is a rare design I have not seen before, and is completely intact. In pleasing condition, stones all perfect with no damage, original chains, gold mounts to the 7 amethysts, fully signed as a Murrle Bennett piece with clear maker’s mark and 950 stamps and finally, a superlative and intricate design. Undoubtedly, a c1900 museum-worthy MB necklace.
This fabulous necklace has all of the features you would hope to find in one of these quality early 1900s pieces, with its hammered silver panels and beautifully millegrained gold settings to the stones. I love an amethyst drop and here, we are spoilt with those three drops. There is such a sense of balance with this piece, with the generous circles and rounded lines of the structure. I also adore the double drop to the centre. The two matching amethyst-set spacers are the icing on the cake of this lovely necklace. I love the way the top line and bottom amethysts are pale in colour, with the three bottom drops being vibrant purple….it just works beautifully, as a study in amethysts.
Every last ounce of hand-finished detailing is exquisite. It feels squat and “right” when you handle it. Pleasingly, the necklace is fully signed with the “950” mark for the quality of silver (purer silver than sterling) and also with the Murrle Bennett maker’s mark. In superb condition with the central pendant measuring a touch under 5cm in height and the wearable length of the chain measuring approx 48cm (19 inches). Clasp replacement at some point in her past.
