A wonderful statement piece of hand-crafted Jugendstil design, with maker’s mark and “DEPOSE” marks plus the “935” silver quality stamp you would expect to see on finer pieces made in Pforzheim, Germany in the c1900 era. This has, essentially, a fan-shaped form with plique-a-jour enamel that runs from light green at the top of the design, to dark green towards the bottom. The pendant has a pale gold wash all over it, so that is lovely against the green and pink too!
The quality touches do not stop there, far from usual (as pink pastes were often used to act as a foil to the green) a beautiful real faceted, pink tourmaline has been used at the heart of the design. It has been set in a carefully millegrained setting.
A small suspended pearl, also very typical of the era, has been set below the main shield shape pendant. A row of 8 small pastes have been set to accentuate that fan shape at the top.
The lines of the pendant are sinuous and very indicative of the Jugendstil / Art Nouveau school of design, particularly from Pforzheim. The maker’s mark is what looks like a JD with a star above it, I have seen some people claiming that it is the mark of Parisian designer Jean Despres, however, this sings Pforzheim to me. Julius Doll of Pforzheim is a much more likely fit.
The silver paper clip chain is original to the piece and is always nice to have. There has been a new catch fitted at some point. The pendant measures approx 3.6cm wide by approx the same in height. The length of the paperclip chain is approx 58cm (22.75 inches) so it is a longer chain than is usually fund on these pieces. An excellent example of plique-a-jour work with a lovely tourmaline too.
