A lovely example of the work of Dorrie Nossiter c1930, which includes her instantly recognisable mix of gemstones in this impressive brooch I call a “wing” design as it reminds me of a bird’s wing or else an angel’s wing. Dorrie was one of the leading exponents of the so-called “second wave” of Arts and Crafts designers and craftspeople. Her work is sought-after and highly recognisable as she used many gemstones in her pieces to give a hugely opulent effect. The colour palette of her gem selection was sublime and here we see a range of pinks from the paler, rosier pink tourmalines to the more subdued pinks of the garnets. Punctuated by turquoise and white pearls-it is a lovely design.

I love the shape of the brooch and also those eight long faceted pink garnets, which fan out at the edge of the longer side of the design. The settings for those 8 stones are rather complex, as they have a sort of backbone silver setting to support them in their positions.  You can see all of those really beautiful tiny claws retaining the pink tourmalines and the row of round, faceted garnets. Another very obvious Dorrie touch, as well as the use of gold balls interspersed throughout the stones.

It is a fabulous piece which would wonderfully adorn any outfit. It retains its original rollover safety catch, and that makes it easy to slip a chain behind in order to ear as a pendant if the fancy takes you too.

The brooch measures approx 5.5cm wide and approx 3.2cm in height. In pleasing condition, there has been one garnet replacement however, the amazing jewellers I use in Hatton Garden, have been so sympathetic in matching the tone of pink so beautifully. I shall send in a new gift box by complimentary Special Delivery in the UK or else by express courier internationally. Boxes in the images are for display only-thank you.
