Just a wonderful example of Dorrie Nossiter’s painstakingly hand-crafted work with the most sublime colourway of blue and green against the gold details – Arts and Crafts at its best, c1930. This is a large, beautifully faceted rock crystal , which Dorrie has decorated in terms of a large silver cap, having more decoration on the front than the reverse. The vibrancy of the decoration is superb- with Dorrie’s typical gold spirals and gold balls punctuating the design between the bezel set stones.
Cabochon jade, chrysoprase and turquoise stones are bezel set, with oval stones, round stones and teardrop shaped stones nestled into the decoration together . An opulent design, which I think is reminiscent of summer, with its golds, blue and pale greens. Wonderful.
I love, too, the tiny carefully-chosen matching paste stone that has such height, set in the centre of the design. The verso has not been neglected, with a round turquoise cabochon positioned above a teardrop shaped green stone, again dotted by gold balls and those gold spirals. A typical Dorrie bale and a few links leading to a green stone bead and those typical fine silver chains either side. There is no catch to the fine fetter chain, as the necklace simply slips over your head. It is actually a lovely length-not a total sautoir, but nevertheless, a long chain at approx 94cm (37 inches).
In excellent condition with no chips or damage to the main rock crystal (quite an achievement these days). I scrutinise all stones and found a teeny tiny edge of a small green stone where it looked like a chip (under huge magnification!) however, I think the stone has always been that shape and was most likely inserted that way into the design. So-I’m happy to call the condition marvellous! The pendant height (from the bead) measures approx 6.5cm -it is heavy and squat in the hand, exactly as it should be.
These remarkable Dorrie pieces certainly do not come along often and this is a one-off design-fabulously hand-crafted and in excellent condition. It will bring a smile to someone’s face.
