A superb antique Georgian ring, c1840s, in a striking and attractive design with 9 diamonds in claw settings. The nine old-cut diamonds are mixed cuts, including table cuts and old cuts. They are mounted in a square openwork design in silver, which really is so aesthetically pleasing.

The diamonds are in closed back settings (typically Georgian) and all are interesting stones. The look of old-cut diamonds is not the same sparkly, bright appearance you get with newer diamonds. They have more inclusions, look greyer but that is part of the appeal of these old stones and these designs. The ornate floral details to each shoulder, crafted in 15ct gold, really enhance the look of the face of the ring. It is just a pleasing design all round.

The face of the ring measures approx 1.4cm by 1.3cm. I love the open work design, meaning you can see these stones hover over your skin as you look down on the arrangement. You can see the non-symmetrical nature of the construction of the ring and where the diamonds have been placed. This is not a fault but how it was created. It is a beautiful ring that feels “right” on the finger.

In pleasing condition-some patina, so it would polish further for you. Light wear to the stones in line with its age. Closed-back stones need to be carefully cleaned so make sure you research this before attempting it yourself. You may wish to hand it to your jeweller when you feel it is time to have it cleaned. You can see the band of the ring is somewhat out of shape, so I mention it for accuracy purposes.

It measures as a UK size P (approx US 7.5). It does come in its own antique box.
