A superlative, one-of-a-kind, hand crafted Arts and Crafts c1925-30 sautoir, by Sibyl Dunlop, London. She did create a small number of these intricate rock crystal pendants with the strong silver structure culminating in that flat cap that we see here. I have to say that the pink tourmalines, make for an astonishing display alongside the many faceted rock crystals used in this design. A unique and substantial sautoir with the pendant hanging very low, as was the style in the 1920s era for these delicious A&C pieces. You can, however, wear with the chain doubled for a shorter style too. This is one of the best pendant and sautoirs of its type, that I have come across. She’s a beauty!
For me, there is a Bernard Instone flavour too, with the leaves and flowers and I know that Bernard made a number of her designs in his silver works, so I am guessing this is one of those pieces. I have come across other Sibyl pieces before, which have also contained Instonesque leaves amidst the design. It makes for a really organic and naturalistic detail. The rather geometric leaf outlines in silver wire, however, feel very Sibyl. The pendant features a fabulously-faceted rock crystal, which bounces the light around and those naturalistic embellishments, with the four cabochons of pink tourmaline-just beautiful.
Above the pendant is a large faceted rock crystal bead, and above that is where the two sautoir chains attach. What is unusual here is the kinetic touch added in the mounting of a round rock crystal bead within a silver circular structure so you can move the bead around. First time I have seen that particular touch. There are no less than 21 (a very meaningful number) faceted rock crystal beads in the sautoir so it feels heavy and substantial. Two intricate links are used in the silver sautoir chain; a small connecting link with a four-petalled flower motif and a large, slim, entwined paper clip link. It is a dream of a piece and so lovely to see one made by Sibyl, as the majority of this type of design I come across are by Amy Sandheim. Both were inspired designers and jewellers!
The sautoir measures approx 120cm (just over 47 inches) in length and the pendant section (from the kinetic bead) measures approx 9.5cm. In excellent order- that is astonishing when you consider the size and volume of stones in this piece. A beautiful and unique necklace.
