A fabulous design, which is a substantial Murrle Bennett statement, so evocative of the c1900 Art Nouveau and Jugendstil movements. Created in Pforzheim for the Anglo-German collaboration of Murrle Bennett, who retailed through Liberty & Co of London. This is a very rare design with hand-hammered silver panels all the way around the necklace and with opals, which are perhaps the most sought-after of stones in these MB pieces. The necklace is a choker-style with a main panel drop.
For collectors, this is a wonderful example for you to acquire for your collection. The 7 opals are spectacular in their vibrant colour shifts so I hope you can see a flavour of the vivid colours in the photos. They shift from blue to electric turquoise to bright green with some oranges, reds and purples too. I also adore the juxtaposition of shapes in this piece, and that, too, is typical of the era. Oval stones, triangular cut-outs, round hammered silver panels , as well as rectangular panels. It’s a beautiful piece of design, exquisitely executed. In superb condition, both silver work and opals. There has been a catch replacement in her distant past and it is sturdy and secure. The necklace (thankfully) comes with a safety chain too, so you can be reassured that little more when wearing her. You wouldn’t want to risk losing her.
The pendant drop section measures approx 4.7cm and the wearable length of the necklace is approx 38cm (15 inches). In excellent condition and ready to be adored.
This beautiful necklace is stamped to the verso of the main plaque with both “950” and the Murrle Bennett company stamp. The 950 represents the purity of the silver, which in this instance is purer than sterling silver.
