Description
A swoon-worthy and stately Austro Hungarian necklace in silver gilt, c1880 which was created in Vienna, by the master silversmith, considered one of Europe’s finest jewellers and enamellers in the era- Hermann Böhm. His work is highly collectable and we usually see his large enamelled jars and vases, so finding his signed jewellery is always a treat! Böhm is considered as one of the finest enamellers of this type of enamelled Austro-Hungarian work. He enamelled designs to the verso of his work so you really can start to understand the amount of time taken to create one of his jewellery masterpieces. This piece is wonderfully designed so that the main pendant section can be detached easily from the chain and worn as a brooch. Two pieces of jewellery in one!
This is one of the finest examples of an Austro Hungarian necklace that I have come across, not least because it features a blues and white combination which is much rarer to find. It is also, pleasingly, fully marked by the maker HB and with the marks for Vienna.
This fabulous necklace exudes quality. The enamelling is exquisite and in such pleasing condition. Most of the enamelling is sky blue in colour but there are touches of a plum purple and a muted orange. The juxtaposition of the creamy white of the pearls is magnificent against the vivid sparkling blues of the faceted sapphire pastes. It is a vibrant and celebratory piece of work.
It is also a highly decorative and complex piece of antique jewellery. Alternating links of different designs form the chain. The pendant drop / brooch is given a touch of articulation by the addition of suspended pearls. The verso is incredible. Along the chain, the links are each enamelled with a variety of designs including one in white and orange that looks very much like a crocus. The verso to the pendant is exquisite and even has a red cross enamelled to its centre.
This level of hand enamelled detailing is what Hermann Böhm is particularly known for and the reverse of this necklace is an inspirational accomplishment.
In excellent condition for its age with all stones, pearls etc intact. All original condition including the decorated box clasp. Stamped for Vienna, and the maker’s mark “HB” on the tongue of the box clasp and also on the link at the top of the pendant / brooch.
The drop section of the pendant measures approx 8cm in height and the wearable length of the necklace measures approx 42cm (16.5 inches)
Box is for display purposes only. I will send in a new necklace presentation box by special delivery within the UK or else by express courier internationally. Thank you.
