Well, here is a simply amazing piece from the early 1900s and Pre-Raphaelite in style. It has Kate Eadie’s very distinctive gold decoration all over the central section; those double flower head designs and the flattened rivet-like details which I have seen many times, especially on Eadie rings. How extraordinary it is to find an ancient solid silver cross relic, decorated by her hand. I do not know whether Kate crafted the silver cross too or whether she had embellished a more ancient piece, perhaps belonging to herself. You will not see the likes of this piece again I’m sure.
It is a unique and glorious thing, featuring detailing on both sides, with the front also being decorated by gems. Four amber cabochons at the cardinal points and six small faceted peridots near the amber too. It is a cheery piece for many reasons, not least of all the richness of the stones and the Eadie gold detailing.
Kate Eadie was a superlative Arts and Crafts artist, designer and craftswoman and she attended the Vittoria Street School for jewellers and silversmiths in Birmingham in the early years of the 1900s. Kate was very much involved in Pre-Raphaelite designs, largely due to being the muse and partner of the famous Pre-Raphaelite painter Edward Burne-Jones. He painted her many times in his work, usually in one Pre-Raphaelite inspired scene or another. Please do look at some of his paintings so you can see how often she appeared in them. I can actually imagine this crucifix being hers, as it seems to have been decorated in such a personal way. I have not seen anything like it before.
The pendant measures approx 7.6cm in height by approx 5cm in width. Double sided details and in pleasing condition, with only light wear to the stones. She is an exquisite thing! Chain is not included.
