Kate Eadie (1880-1945) pieces always fill me with joy and excitement in equal measure. She is a highly sought after jeweller, who was part of the Birmingham School art and jewellery scene. She married the Pre-Raphaelite painter, Sidney Meteyard and, rather famously, became his muse. He painted female figures in her likeness in a large number of his romanticised paintings. Her work is always precisely executed, demonstrating expert hands time and time again. She uses several tell-tale motifs, which appear a number of times in her work.
Every piece, unique as well as being designed and crafted in the early 1900s by Eadie herself. Every rare piece you come across is different to the last and this is the first time I have seen her use emerald matrix in her designs. This beautiful pendant necklace is in excellent, original condition, including the fine original chains and unusual, hand-crafted fastener.
We have those typical Eadie double layer flowers picked out in gold and those curled ropework features which I have seen on both necklaces, as well as on rings by Eadie. I love that the drop is articulated, so that there is movement within the piece. It is the first time I have seen the spiral designs in sterling silver down each side of the main plaque….it does give a lovely effect.
Emerald matrix is fairly unusual to come across in such antique pieces and I think that adds another layer of interest to this scarce necklace. The main stone, set on the horizontal, has a lovely green emerald section at the top and moves in an ombre effect to brown further down. The stones have natural surface-reaching inclusions, as is typical of the characteristic of these stones. The pendant height measures approx 5cm and the chain measures approx 42cm (16.5 inches).
