Description
A beautiful, hand-crafted antique c1900 Arts and Crafts ring, which is by Mary Thew of the Glasgow Girls. This ring is so typical of Thew’s work, from the flattened double rope-twist A&C band, to the distinctive leaves, which appear in other pieces of her work I have seen, including some lovely necklaces.
It is a rustic design, very organic and no exact symmetry, which replicates nature more and is in line with the Arts and Crafts ideals of the era. The squareish face of the ring is edged with a fine rope-twist detail. The hexagonal-shaped mother-of-pearl is bezel set in the centre of the design. I love that it is mostly creamy white with a third of it having that typical green streak, that catches the light well. To the left and right of the stone there is a line of three silver balls and to the top and bottom, we see a single silver ball, flanked by a leaf on either side. I love the distinctive leaves with the outline edge and an inset inner shape.
In pleasing condition- with a little patina from her age. The face of the ring measures approx 1.7cm square and the size is approx UK size Q (US size 8.25). Lovely to find a larger example.
I shall send in a new ring box by complimentary tracked and signed or else Special Delivery within the UK. Thank you.
