Description
A super hand-crafted Arts and Crafts brooch by Mary Thew (one of the Glasgow Girls) in the earlier years of the twentieth century. It demonstrates beautifully her unique silver knots wire work, stylised leaves and placement of graduated silver balls to decorate the basic structure. I love this type of brooch feels so squat and heavy in the hand, as the settings were suitably chunky. Lovely to see the brooch set with stones often associated with Scotland too.
As Mary crafted each piece herself, you can be assured that this is a completely unique piece of work. I always appreciate the glowing nature of carnelians, and here, we have three set around the wreath structure. In the past some of Mary’s pieces were misattributed to Dorrie Nossiter, but as you can see, with the knots and the very typical Mary leaves, there is no question it is one of her pieces.
In lovely condition and ready to wear. The diameter of the brooch is approx 3.6cm. In pleasing condition, both silver and stones, it has clearly been well looked-after.
