Description
This is a rarity of a necklace, created by hand in the c1900 era. Very much in the English Arts and Crafts tradition, the piece, unusually, is designed as a romantic Toi et Moi necklace, popular with the Edwardians. A sign of eternal togetherness and eternal love, the drops are traditionally of differing lengths like this. The message of eternal love is echoed too, in the use of turquoise, reminiscent in colour of the forget-me-nots. It is a beautifully hand-constructed piece in excellent condition and all original, even down to the delicately hand-crafted toggle and fastener.
The large, domed central stone is so smooth and glossy, as are the others in the arrangement. There are clusters of three silver balls at the cardinal points of the main stone and then a scrolling open work design on the surrounding area. As mentioned, the drops are of differing lengths, with an S shaped link used to suspend the stone at the end of each chain drop. I can see evidence of the silversmith, as the verso of one small stone on the drops, has a tiny arrow etched into it, undoubtedly to remind the jeweller which way to insert the stone into the setting when the time came to mount the stones. A lovely little detail.
The turquoise spacer at the top of the pendant section, pulls the chains together in such a flattering way to wear. The drop section (from the top spacer) measures approx 9cm in length and the chain measures approx 41.5cm (approx 16.5 inches). In beautiful condition with some patina.
I shall send in a new gift box (not the box in the images) by special delivery within the UK or else by international express courier internationally. Thank you.
