Description
A superlative example of the glorious Art Nouveau / Arts and Crafts necklaces c1900 created by Murrle Bennett, the Anglo German company, who mainly sold through Liberty & Co of London. This is a rare design I have not seen before, and is completely intact. In original condition, tick- stones all perfect and stunningly vibrant (Siberian amethysts), tick – original chains, tick – original toggle fastener, tick – gold mounts to the amethysts, tick – fully signed as Murrle Bennett piece with clear MBc and 950 stamps, tick and finally, a superlative and intricate design, tick. Undoubtedly, a c1900 museum-worthy MB necklace.
This fabulous necklace has all of the features you would hope to find in one of these early 1900s pieces, with its hammered silver panels, faux rivets, separate panels held together by double links, matching spacers along the chain, gold mounts to create the perfect foil for the vibrancy of the Cadbury’s purple amethysts, an Art Nouveau knotted motif, fetter chain and so on. This incredible necklace is elevated further by the use of these five intense and rich Siberian amethysts, which are incredibly intense in colour. Just beautiful!
Every last ounce of hand-finished detailing is exquisite, right down to the hand millegrained mounts for the stones. Pleasingly, the necklace is fully signed with the “950” mark for the quality of silver (purer silver than sterling) and also with the Murrle Bennett maker’s mark. In superb condition with the central pendant measuring approx 5.8cm in height and the wearable length of the chain approx 46cm (18 inches).
