NOW RESERVED – thank you

A completely stunning 1930s Arts and Crafts brooch, all hand-crafted in beautiful, exact detail with a tour de force Australian Black Boulder opal, which is quite possibly the liveliest opal I think I have ever seen. I have studied this brooch for hours and hours now and have compared the work to known Rhoda Wager pieces. I have seen direct traits in this work to that of confirmed Wager pieces. I, therefore, feel confident to attribute it to Wager. I have seen dozens of copies of Wager’s work and to be honest, the detail lets them down, particularly when the leaves look clumsy or when the brooch has been cast, in part or as a whole. In fact, spend a few minutes now looking for similar brooches and you will find them but be disappointed in the detailing. This is certainly not the case at all with this gorgeous thing. You can see the sharpness and “intention” of each leaf and its placement, along with the typical silver balls interspersed throughout.

It is of top quality and as for the amazing opal-I only hope you get a flavour of the liveliness and range of colours throughout the whole of the opal. It is easy to see why this captivating stone was selected to crown this beautiful brooch. In 1939 this brooch was fitted with a dainty, well-executed plaque to the verso, carrying the words “Jean from Don 13.6.39”. This was a love token gifted just before the outbreak of the 2nd World War. Such care has been taken by the jeweller with the overall quality of the little plaque that I believe they must have known and appreciated the quality of the brooch itself. Just a beautiful thing!!!

The brooch measures approx 5.2cm wide by approx 2.6cm in height. It is in excellent order, with only light wear to the opal. I will send in a new gift box to protect it well and send by courier internationally or else by Special Delivery within the UK.
