Description

A Sibyl Dunlop c1930s Arts and Crafts silver foliate ring, which has been retained in its original Sibyl Dunlop ring box. It is crafted with a large, sparkling faceted citrine at its centre in a bezel setting. The openwork framework in silver, depicts a typical Arts and Crafts design of scrolling tendrils and vine leaves, with a tiny silver berry at the North and South points. There is a typical rope work detail at the foot of the stone’s setting and I love the way the tendrils come together in that typical double coil motif of Dunlop’s.

I have a strong suspicion that Mr Instone made this to Sibyl’s design, as you can see several of his trademark touches when you flip the ring over to study the verso. A typical silver double band completes the ring. It is stamped as “SILVER” on the inside and has the remnants of the maker’s mark but the ring has been resized in her past and there are only pieces of letters visible now. It is part of an acknowledged group of work by Dunlop and still retains the original box…hurrah (even though I had to replace a crumbling pad which wouldn’t hold the ring-there is a black foam one in there now).

The ring is in excellent order generally but there is a chip in the stone towards the edge. It is so difficult to see but if you run your nail gently over the stone towards the rim you can feel it and obviously you can see it under a loupe. What I would say-I don’t consider it is a large enough chip to replace the stone. It is a lovely citrine and well-faceted (as is typical for Dunlop) so it really is difficult to spot, even when you know it is there! There are other pieces of Dunlop’s jewellery with these octagonal citrines so perhaps you may wish to buy another piece too. Other pieces of the parure  are stamped with both “SD” and “S DUNLOP”.

It is a lovely, impressive ring and who doesn’t love citrines. It measures as a UK size P.5 (US 7.75)

I will send by Tracked and Signed post in the Dunlop ring box shown on the images-thank you!
