An incredibly pretty, delicate and supremely executed Arts and Crafts necklace c1900, of the Birmingham School genre and most likely a design for Liberty & Co, London. Very reminiscent of Bernard Cuzner / William Hair Haseler designed pieces. This is such an achievement of hand-crafted work, as every little piece of this remarkable necklace has been hand wrought. The elongated silver links are as a pair of stalks which culminate in a pair of leaves-I have seen this before on some Liberty pieces. It is fabulous to see how the stalks and leaves are oriented, facing the central pearl on each of the two main chains and also on the long drop’s pearl. Such attention to detail!
The central, round openwork plaque of the pendant has a turquoise in a fine millegrain setting and a series of clusters of leaves/flowers and berries set around the edge. Such gorgeous design. There is a double silver link drop to the bottom matching drop, also housing a turquoise in a fine mille grain setting. The same floral design adorns the top of the drop, with the other three cardinal points having a silver ball in place-very much a Birmingham School element.
This is a joyous necklace-not large and clunky, in fact, of more petite proportions but with supremely executed design and craftspersonship. You cannot but help wonder at this level of detail and the tiny elements that make up this whole piece.
The pendant drop measures approx 6.7cm and the length of the chain is approx 42.5cm (16.75 inches). In excellent order, natural pearls are very lustrous and no damage to either turquoise cabochon. The clasp has been replaced, as I believe it may have had a toggle fastener originally. Just a beautiful thing!
